November 11, 2015: Focus on: The WBSS Mission and Legacy
White Bear Sailing School (WBSS) is a non-profit school that has operated since 1956, teaching the life-long skill and love of sailing to young and old.
The WBSS mission statement says that we will “engage in such activities that foster the knowledge, practice and the art of sailing on White Bear Lake among the youth and their families, both as a current and lifelong activity.”
Give to the Max Day is Thursday, November 12 this year. It’s a day once a year that Minnesota devotes to fundraising for local non-profit organizations and we need your help!
In 2015, White Bear Sailing School served more than 300 students, from beginners through accomplished racers, some as young as six years old and many adults. Some are interested in learning to race, others in learning a lifetime sport that can take them all over the world. Our classes and programs are open to all.
Under the leadership of Director, Nick Hovland, our programs begin in early spring, as soon as the ice is off the lake, and continue through the end of October with High School Racing programs. WBSS and High School Sailing programs draw kids from all over the region including students from:
- Mahtomedi HS
- White Bear HS
- Mounds Park Academy
- Mounds View HS
- North Branch HS
During the summer months, classes for beginner, intermediate and racing sailors are underway, with opportunities for students to advance at their own pace to more challenging levels of sailing and racing. Weekly Twin Cities-area regattas are a great way for young sailors to get started in racing with coaching support.
