Give to the Max: WBSS High School Sailing
November 11, 2015: The WBSS High School Sailing Program has grown each year to include more area schools, welcoming students who are new to sailing as well as experienced sailors. The sailors practice during the week and travel to race most weekends, sometimes as far as Chicago.
High school sailing is the only accredited High School sport in the US that is truly co-ed, where girls and boys compete directly – and fairly – against each other. It’s also a high school sport where beginners can learn to sail and compete the same year.
In Minnesota, students can now earn athletic letters in sailing and 13 students earned letters for sailing this year through WBSS.
This year, Mounds Park Academy (MPA) had a team for the first time, anchored by brothers Josh (Age 18) and Toby Sullivan (Age 15). In their words:
“WBSS really encourages students who are new to sailing to come and join the sailing team – they welcome new sailors and teach them how to sail. Because of that, for the first time this year our school – Mounds Park Academy – had a full 4 person sailing team.
In September, WBSS brought 4 teams to Chicago for the Great Oaks Qualifier regatta. Out of 32 teams there, WBSS had two teams in the top 4 qualify for the Great Oaks National regatta in New Orleans and the MPA team won the regatta!
The MPA team also qualified to sail the Great Lakes Championship in Chicago this fall where MPA finished 2nd. This was the best finish WBSS has ever had in this race! We couldn’t have done it without the support and coaching of WBSS. Thanks to our coaches, Nick and Natalie!”
