Eddie Cox sailing Marvin (W-66) with crew Ed Cox, Will Crary and Kate Cox took second place in a 61 boat Class E Scow fleet at the 2017 ILYA Championship Regatta hosted by the Lake Geneva Yacht Club. With racing spanning 4 days from August 17-20 the E fleet saw a wide variety of conditions.

Thursday began with windy conditions and Team Marvin took a 4th in race one. A second race was started later in the morning, but was subsequently abandoned when winds peaked at over 35 mph! The A fleet and MC fleet did not race that afternoon due to the high winds.

Friday afternoon’s racing started quite late due to several General Recalls, which made for a long day, but there were two great races completed by around 7pm. Conditions were very challenging due to the shifting winds but the breeze was sufficient to complete the races. Team Marvin took a 6th and a 2nd in those two races.

Saturday was a complete drifter all day and no fleets completed any racing.

With Eddie sitting in second place overall and a shot at winning the event, everything came down to Sunday morning which dawned much like Saturday – hazy and almost zero wind. The breeze slowly built and after more than an hours postponement, racing got underway around 10am in very light, difficult and choppy conditions. The first race of the day saw all the leaders go left for what little breeze there was, while the second race favored the right side of the course. Team Marvin hung on with an 11th and a 23rd to keep second place overall under some of the toughest race conditions this year.

Three E boats from White Bear participated in the Championship this year, with Lee Alnes (Euphoria, W-25) finishing 11th overall and Charlie Igo (Zamboni, W-99) finishing17 overall.

Congratulations to Eddie and Team Marvin on a great regatta. Complete results are online here.
