Class A Scow Season Starts 6/3/13

wbyc_news May 31, 2013

W-25, EuphoriaThe 2013 Class A Scow season begins next week on White Bear Lake.  This year we have 11 boats registered (the most of any ILYA Club) so it should be a great year for us at WBYC. Nearly 80 people are directly involved in sailing these incredible machines and we always get dozens more watching the races.

If you are a spectator coming out for Monday night races, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Safety First – A Scows can be very fast boats and they need a lot of room to manouver.  Stay well clear of them, particularly at the mark roundings and near the start and finish lines.
  2. Courtesy – A Scows are very difficult to sail in light breeze.  They are slow to get going and quick to stop when they hit wakes or chop.  Please be aware of your power boat wake near or within the race course and keep it to a minimum.
  3. Schedule – The A Scow race schedule is posted online for your convenience.  There are typically two races back-to-back starting at 6:30 PM.  If there is not enough wind or too much wind, we may postpone the start time per our Sailing Instructions or we may cancel racing for the evening altogether.
  4. Communications – The Race Committee and A Scow competitors use VHF Channel 72 for race announcements.  Prior to heading out on the water, there is a 5:30 PM announcement message on VHF and on the phone at 612-564-9292.

The WBYC A fleet competes for trophies in three series of races as follows:

WBYC Club Championship Series:

  • 10 Scheduled Races
  • Two races each Monday evening @ 6:30 & 7:15pm
  • First race occurs on 1st Monday in June and continues until 10 races are scheduled.
  • All remaining Special & Post Season races will be make-up for Champ Series.

Special Series:

  • 6 Scheduled Races
  • Two races each Monday evening @ 6:30 & 7:15pm
  • Only 1 race scheduled @ 6:30pm if in August
  • First race occurs on 1st Monday after completion of Championship continues until 6 races are scheduled.
  • All prior Championship races will be pre-make-up for Special Series.
  • All remaining Post Season races will be make-up for Special Series.

Post-Season Series:

  • Typically 6 Scheduled Races (Minimum 3)
  • One race each Monday evening @ 6:30pm plus one race on the Sunday before Labor Day.
  • First race occurs on 1st Monday after completion of Special continues Sunday before Memorial Day
  • All prior Championship & Special  races will be pre-make-up for Post Season Series.

Racing results are posted online, usually within 24 -48 hours of the race completion.

See you on the water!
