Rescheduling the WBYC Spring Laser regatta a month later (due to the late ice-out this year) was well worth the wait. Sunday June 2nd was perfect for Spring Laser sailing; relatively warm and sunny, with a northwest breeze of 5-14 throughout the single-day event. The favorable conditions brought out a good sized fleet of 14 Lasers to WBYC, traveling from all around the Twin Cities area.
Four races were completed in the morning, sailing deep into Mahtomedi bay of White Bear Lake. Three more races were run after a break for lunch. The afternoon races were conducted further upwind in the Yacht Club bay.
The wind started out strong and provided a good mix of competition at the top of the pack! Mike Schmid won the first race and went on to win the entire regatta (with a total of 15 points in 7 races). Kurt Taken-Holtze was sailing fast all day with two bullets in the afternoon and 16 points overall giving him a solid second place. Mark Kastel rounded out the top three with 21 points.
Thanks to Jay Rendall and Bob Quirk who did a great job serving as our Race Committee. They kept the race courses as square as possible through shifty conditions.
Special Thanks to Gloria Drake for making lunches, Craig Drake and Gretchen Wilbrandt for running the chase boat and also to Martin and Kristina Bonsager for hosting the post regatta social! WBYC looks forward to hosting this event again next season when our waterfront construction will be complete.
